Non – Executive Board Member of the Steering Board
Companies House, an Executive Agency of BERR (Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform)
£4,800 per annum (pending review)

Companies House is looking for a non - executive board member for its Steering Board to replace a current member whose contract expires at the end of this year.  The Steering Board is an advisory group that meets four times a year and provides advice to the executive board.

Companies House is a successful Agency and Trading Fund, with an exciting future. Excellent customer service is an overriding aim as we transform ourselves into a modern e-business. We are moving from an organisation that processes an enormous quantity of paper to one that is centred on the electronic exchange of data. Our turnover is just over £69m per annum and we have over 2.7million companies on the register. We contribute to BERR policy making, especially better regulation and company law.

The Steering Board is an important part of our governance arrangements, with non - executive members providing challenge and support to the Agency’s service delivery, performance, strategic direction, corporate plans and targets.  The Steering Board also provides guidance and advice from a commercial or business standpoint to the chief executive and his senior team on the operation and development of the agency.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate that he/she has strong experience at board level in a significant service delivery organisation; good customer awareness and a track record of delivery; experience of managing and leading people through significant change; an excellent understanding of all people related issues in a service sector environment; familiarity with the development of HR approaches and strategies; an understanding of the public sector; and ideally an understanding of the commercial sector that Companies House serves.

This post is fixed-term for 3 years, with a time commitment of nine days a year (five meetings - which includes an awayday in the summer - and preparatory work), with effect from 1 January 2009.  Meetings will be held in Wales, London, Scotland and Northern Ireland with reasonable expenses being paid.

There is a possibility that the person appointed may be invited to join the Audit Committee.  This would require a further time commitment of six days (four meetings and preparatory work).

Remuneration is £4,800 per annum but is currently under review.
